Culture at Brettonwood
After a long day of lessons and academic activities, the afternoon sees Brettonwood High coming alive with a buzz of culture and sport activities.
At BHS, our cultural programme is crafted to be dynamic and diverse enough to cater to various interests. This provides every student with the opportunity to find their niche and nurture their passions.
Our cultural clubs and societies offer a social platform for students to explore different cultural and creative pursuits.
Artistic and Creative
Art Club
This is a club that encourages a creative outlet for learners. It grants talented learners, who cannot take Art as a subject past Grade 9 Creative Arts, an avenue to express their creativity and talent.
Choir
The Brettonwood Choir is an exciting opportunity for students to showcase their musical talents by working on performances, practicing their singing and harmonic skills, and learning about the different aspects of music.
Drama Club
This club allows for all students to express themselves creatively. It addresses topical issues using our learners many talents of acting, poetry and music.
History Club
This is a space for learners to discuss interesting historical aspects not explored in the Grade 10-12 History syllabus. This club provides a platform to educate the school and it’s learners on important South African events.
Poetry Club
A platform for learners to express themselves and explore the art of writing and understanding poetry. It also develops their creativity, as well as their language skills.
Toastmasters
Toastmasters is a club that inspires learners to speak publicly It motivates learners to get involved in public events at school, through the preparing and delivering of speeches. Furthermore, they respond to impromptu questions, giving and receiving constructive feedback.
Brettonwood learners are encouraged to participate in cultural activities, clubs and societies offered at the School.

Academic
Articulate
What began as an informal writer’s club has morphed into a Haiku writer’s club in which learners practice their poetry skills through exercises such as being given an image and basing poems on the feelings it conjures. The club is now expanding into other forms, this year trying their hand at Tanka poetry.
Book Club
Book Club is a space in which students read and discuss several genres of books and encourages growing literacy in our students as well as embracing students that already have a deep passion for literature
Chess Club
The game of chess develops critical thinking, problem solving, and decision-making skills. Chess Club gives students an opportunity to learn the game of chess, improve their skills, and to enjoy challenging their peers, while experiencing healthy competition and team spirit, through informal matches and an annual tournament.
Debating Club
Debating involves formal discussions of various topics such as politics, economics, and environmental, socio-cultural and educational issues. Brettonwood holds friendly matches internally but is also affiliated with the Durban and Coastal Debating League (DCDL), with our teams continually performing well in both our Junior and Senior divisions.
Spelling Bee
What began as an interclass spelling competition has since grown, and has gradually grown, culminating in our involvement in the South African Literacy Association (SALA) yielding fantastic results, with Brettonwood ranking first in the country in 2022.
Support and Wellness
Catering Club
This club introduces learners to the culinary arts, offering practical experience in food preparation, presentation and safety. It also cultivates teamwork, time management and organizational skills necessary for success in the industry. Their creativity is encouraged in their experimentation with recipes and techniques, while also gaining real-world experience through the catering of school events.
SCO
The Students’ Christian Organisation aims to reach students with the Gospel, acting as a mouthpiece for Christ through building students into communities of disciples, developing student leadership and taking steps to make an impact on the school for the Glory of God.
Social and Community Engagement
DYC - Durban Youth Club
The Durban Youth Council is a non-profit, community service-based youth organization. It is composed of Grade 11 students from schools around Durban. DYC provides learners an opportunity to manage community-based outreach projects enabling them to develop their leadership skills. Project H2O is the focus for 2024, collecting water for underprivileged schools with the aim being to collect 500 bottles per school.
Enviro Club
The aim of this club is to motivate, inspire, and encourage young budding environmentalists to create awareness about using our natural resources wisely, while at the same time drawing learner’s attention to current environmental concerns.
Interact Club
Interact Club is a Rotary Club sponsored club that helps to develop learners’ leadership skills through the power of Service Above Self. Every year projects are organized to help the school or community and to promote international understanding.
TADA
Teen substance abuse in South Africa is an ever-growing concern. Teenagers Against Drug Abuse aims to create awareness about drug abuse, it’s consequences, effects, and impact on the lives of teenagers through informative discussions with professionals and hearing real-life stories from victims of addiction.
WOW
Women Of Worth is an empowerment club for girls. This club is a space for them to discuss their issues, develop their confidence, self-esteem and self-love, and to foster an environment of sisterhood and support.
